Invasive Species — A Silent Threat to Gopher Tortoise Habitats

While habitat destruction and development often receive the most attention in conservation discussions, another threat quietly spreads across the Southeastern landscape—invasive species. These non-native plants and animals can dramatically alter ecosystems, displacing native vegetation, disrupting food chains, and degrading the habitats that gopher tortoises rely on for survival.

What Are Invasive Species?

Invasive species are plants, animals, or organisms that originate outside a region and spread aggressively once introduced. Without their natural predators or environmental checks, these species can multiply rapidly and outcompete native plants and wildlife.

In Florida and throughout the Southeast, invasive species often arrive through human activity—accidental transport, landscaping choices, agriculture, or the release of exotic pets. Once established, they can spread across large areas, fundamentally changing natural habitats.

For gopher tortoises, these changes can mean fewer food plants, degraded burrowing areas, and altered ecological balance.


Invasive Plants and Habitat Degradation

Some of the most problematic invasive plants include:

Cogongrass (Imperata cylindrica)
This aggressive grass forms dense stands that prevent native plants from growing. It spreads rapidly through underground rhizomes and can create thick mats that tortoises cannot easily forage through.

Bahia Grass
Often planted for pasture or lawns, bahia grass spreads widely and replaces the diverse native groundcover that supports tortoise diets.

Chinese Tallow Tree
This fast-growing tree can quickly invade open habitats, creating dense shade that suppresses the sun-loving plants tortoises rely on.

When these invasive plants dominate an area, the once open, sunlit groundcover becomes thick, shaded, and biologically simplified—conditions that tortoises cannot thrive in.


Invasive Animals and Burrow Disruption

Invasive animals also pose challenges for tortoise populations.

Feral hogs, for example, dig extensively in sandy soils while searching for food. Their rooting behavior can destroy tortoise nests and damage native plant communities.

Armadillos, although native to the Americas, have expanded far beyond their historic range and frequently dig into tortoise burrows while searching for insects. This activity can collapse tunnels or disturb tortoises and other burrow inhabitants.

Predatory invasive species can also threaten hatchlings. Young tortoises are especially vulnerable to animals such as raccoons and certain non-native predators that raid nests.


How Invasive Species Spread

Invasive species spread through several pathways:

  • Land disturbance, such as construction or agriculture

  • Transportation of seeds by vehicles, animals, or wind

  • Landscaping with non-native plants

  • Movement of contaminated soil or equipment

Once established, many invasive species reproduce rapidly and are extremely difficult to remove.

Mechanical Removal
Cutting, mowing, or digging out invasive plants can reduce their spread and allow native vegetation to recover.

Targeted Herbicides
In some cases, carefully applied herbicides are necessary to control aggressive species like cogongrass that cannot be removed manually.

Prescribed Fire
Regular controlled burns help maintain native ecosystems and suppress certain invasive plants that cannot tolerate fire.

Replanting Native Vegetation
Restoring native grasses and wildflowers helps rebuild the natural food web and prevents invasive species from reclaiming the area.

When invasive species replace native plants, the entire ecological balance shifts, affecting not only tortoises but many other species that depend on these habitats.

Protecting large, intact landscapes is one of the most effective ways to prevent invasive species from spreading. Well-managed conservation areas allow natural ecological processes—like fire and seasonal plant cycles—to maintain habitat balance.
