At first glance, a gopher tortoise burrow appears to be nothing more than a hole in the ground surrounded by a mound of sand. But beneath that modest entrance lies a complex underground network that supports a remarkable web of life. These burrows are not just shelters—they are ecological lifelines that sustain entire communities of animals and contribute to the health of the surrounding landscape.
Because of this extraordinary role, the gopher tortoise is widely recognized as a keystone species, meaning its presence supports many other species in ways that ripple throughout the ecosystem.
An Underground Neighborhood
A single gopher tortoise burrow can extend 20 to 40 feet long and up to 10 feet deep, providing stable temperatures and protection from weather extremes. Within this underground space, a surprising number of animals find refuge.
More than 350 species have been documented using gopher tortoise burrows. These animals are known as commensals—species that benefit from living in the burrow without harming the tortoise. Some stay briefly during extreme weather, while others rely on burrows for much of their lives.

Many of these animals would struggle to survive in open upland habitats without the protection the burrow provides.
Protection from Heat, Cold, and Fire
The Southeastern United States experiences extreme environmental conditions—summer heat, droughts, sudden cold fronts, and periodic wildfires. Burrows offer a stable refuge from all of them.
Temperatures deep inside the burrow remain relatively constant throughout the year. When surface temperatures exceed 100°F in summer, burrow interiors stay significantly cooler. During winter cold snaps, they remain warmer than the surrounding soil.
Perhaps most importantly, burrows provide safety during wildfires. When prescribed burns or natural fires sweep through a landscape, many animals retreat underground. After the flames pass, these animals emerge to recolonize the refreshed habitat.
Without burrows, fire could devastate entire local wildlife communities.
A Hub for Biodiversity
The presence of tortoise burrows dramatically increases biodiversity within a habitat. Areas with healthy tortoise populations often support a wider range of reptiles, amphibians, insects, and mammals than nearby areas without them.
This happens because burrows create microhabitats with unique conditions—cooler temperatures, higher humidity, and shelter from predators. These conditions allow species that normally couldn’t survive in exposed upland environments to coexist there.
In many cases, the burrow acts as a stepping stone for wildlife movement across a landscape, allowing animals to travel safely between feeding and breeding areas.
Soil Engineering and Ecosystem Health
Beyond providing shelter, burrows improve the health of the soil itself. When tortoises dig, they move large amounts of sand to the surface, mixing soil layers and increasing aeration. This process allows water to penetrate the ground more effectively, reducing runoff and erosion.
The sandy mound outside the burrow also becomes a small ecological hotspot. Seeds carried by wind or animals often settle in these disturbed soils, where sunlight and nutrients allow them to germinate quickly.
Many native plants thrive on these mounds, which in turn attract pollinators and insects—adding another layer to the ecosystem network.
Burrows and Nutrient Cycling
As animals move in and out of burrows, organic matter accumulates inside—shed skin, plant material, insect remains, and animal droppings. Microorganisms break down this material, returning nutrients to the soil.
This process contributes to nutrient cycling, enriching the surrounding ground and supporting the growth of nearby vegetation. The result is healthier plant communities that benefit grazing species like the tortoise itself.
In this way, the burrow becomes both a shelter and a miniature recycling system that supports the surrounding habitat.
When Burrows Disappear
The loss of gopher tortoise burrows has far-reaching consequences. When development destroys habitat or heavy machinery collapses burrows, the impact extends beyond the tortoise.
Entire micro-ecosystems disappear overnight.
Animals that relied on burrows for protection must suddenly compete for scarce shelter. Predation increases, reproduction declines, and biodiversity suffers.
This is one of the reasons gopher tortoises are protected by law across much of their range. Protecting them means protecting the vast network of species that depend on their digging behavior.
A Living Infrastructure
