Our High Springs Wildlife Sanctuary & Tortoise Preserve

WE NEED YOUR HELP

The Tortoise Conservancy is looking to acquire this site by Summer 2025. This 104 acre site to be known as our High Springs Wildlife Sanctuary & Tortoise Preserve is located in Gilchrist County, FL. Over the next few years, our goal is for this site to become home to over 500 gopher tortoises as well as the 350 other species supported by them as a Keystone Species.
We hope to have the land under our control soon. We are looking at all three of our land acquisition methods to try to make this site a part of our preserved land base.  Method One is we need to raise the funds needed to acquire the land with our own Conservancy funds. Method Two we are discussing with the current land owner the option of donating all or some of the purchase price to us. If neither of these methods are an option, we will look to investors and our Method Three form of acquisition and that is to have the 104 acres of land purchased by someone else, transformed into a gopher tortoise recipient, and then after it is an established recipient site, be donated to The Tortoise Conservancy as we become and remain the stewards of the land and the tortoises in perpetuity.
Any of the three methods is a win for nature, the Conservancy, and most
of all for the preservation of the gopher tortoise species in general.
Once the land has been donated to us, our members and donors will have the opportunity to get involved with habitat enhancement projects as well as building out the nature trails on the property.
